2012: Golden Global Award

Idris Elba, Octavia Spencer Win at 2012 Golden Globes

Plus acting great Morgan Freeman receives the Cecil B. De Mille Award.

 Idris Elba, Octavia Spencer:
A Hollywood’s actor Idris Elba in the early broadcast, won the second biggest Best Actress Drama Golden Globe award, several other Black actors won big to pick up the slack.

Early in the broadcast, Idris Elba won the award for Best Performance by an Actor in a Mini-Series or Motion Picture Made for TV for his portrayal as the title role in the BBC series Luther.

While The Help’s Octavia Spencer took home the Golden Globe trophy for Best Supporting Actress in a Drama.

Acting legend Sidney Poitier co-introduced Morgan Freeman, the recipient of this year’s Cecil B. De Mille award. It was a mutual admiration lovefest between the two thespian giants. Poitier called Freeman a “prince in his profession,” while Freeman told Poitier in his home the award will be known as "The Sidney Poitier Award."

Davis lost the Best Actress Drama award to Meryl Streep for her performance as Margaret Thatcher in the film Iron Lady. But in her acceptance speech Streep praised all great films featuring actresses this year, including the critically acclaimed Pariah. And Streep finished her talk by expressing her love for her “friend and her girl” Davis.

Next up, Academy Award nominations. Will Viola and Meryl will once again go toe to toe in the Best Actress category? And more importantly, who will win? Stay tuned.
